  • Maxwells DIY has been serving the public for nearly 80 years, founded in 1932 by Jack Maxwell, a cabinet maker, who opened a small shop in Durham City.

Expansion resulted in a move to Sunderland in 1946, where he rebuilt bomb-damaged premises in Vine Place.

As the family business grew, Jack’s son, John Donald Maxwell – known as Don – took over the management of the business in the mid-sixties, and started to expand the company with more branches opening over the next couple of decades; first in Jarrow, then Fulwell, and on to both South and North Shields, Newcastle, Gateshead, and Birtley.

Don officially retired in 1992, but is still working in the business at the young age of 88. Jack’s grandsons, are still carrying the flame, and upholding the same family values of supplying quality products, coupled with exceptional customer service.

Managing Director, Keith Maxwell, says: “Many of our employees have worked with us for more than 30 years, and they use their experience and professionalism to ensure that we maintain our high standard of customer care.

“We pride ourselves on being a ‘bricks & mortar’ company. We are always here, or on the end of the phone, ready to listen to questions and provide solutions, with honest feedback.”

Whether it’s doors, DIY, or homeware supplies you’re looking for, Maxwells can help.
